One of the biggest trends in home décor and gift gifting, is the unassuming house plant! It has actually been a big trend for a few years now, and it doesn't look like it's going to change anytime soon!
I've always been a fan of the house plant, so I embraced this tropical trend with open arms. The scent of the Geraniums from my grandma's kitchen window when I was a little girl, has stayed with me after all these years, and puts me right back in that kitchen, every time I breathe in their scent. When I was younger, my mom had a huge Aloe Vera plant in our living room. If we would have a burn or an itch, she would simply break off a piece and rub it on the bothersome area. Most,(in my age group atleast!) know of the health benefits of this magnificent plant, but I find so many of the younger generation seeking out this plant, primarly for it's décor use, are unaware of these benefits.
Interior plants bring atmosphere to a home. I love natural elements in my home, so plants are an obvious choice for me. Plants not only look good in a room, but they clean the air & bring freshness to the room. My interior/exterior design staple, has always been, adding lots of green! Nothing feels better than being surrounded by nature's green.
The three most important keys to keep in mind when buying a house plant; PLACEMENT, SELECTION, and the PERFECT POT
When adding a plant as part of your décor, you need to decide where it is going to go. One thing I always do, not only with plants, but when decorating a room with décor or a furniture piece, is to go to the entrance of each room, and see where your eye automatically goes, find a focal point, see how it feels when you first look into the room, without over thinking it!! Does it feel comfortable? Is there a spot that seems bare or dull? Don't limit the space to just the floor, but perhaps a hanging pot on the wall or hanging from the ceiling, or from a curtain rod. It has to not only look right to me, but more importantly, feel right! When using plants as decor, they should always accent the space, not over power it!
Now you can pick out the perfect plant. There are so many great stylish & easy to care for plants out there, now a days. At WISH, we have a variety of plants, from Snake Plants, to ZZ Plants, Fiddle Leaf Figs, and Ferns. A lot of these plants are versatile, and will suit a combination of locations.
Lastly, planting with the right pot. I can't say enough, how the pot is truly half of the display, and it is really worth the money, to take your plant one step further, allowing it to truly be an eye piece! We carry a variety of pots & stands, floor pots, to mid century modern patterned counter pots, as well as basket pot covers, in a variety of sizes, shapes, textures & colors. At WISH, we always add products like moss, wood chips, glass chips, or recycled cork chips to our potted plants. These not only finish off the look, by adding a modern touch, but it also helps keep the soil evenly moist. With all this being said, if you already have plants in your home, you can step outside the box a bit, and try mixing a pot outside of your home style. Here is an example of what I mean. Let's say you have a modern home, you would typically go with a clean lined, solid colored pot, however, now you may choose to mix it up by choosing a pot made of wood in a white wash finish, more of a rustic feel. If your home doesn't have a lot of color, choosing a colored pot, can give that pop of color, you were looking for. If you want to group a variety of plants together for maximum impact, perhaps try grouping two different sized plants and incorporating a décor piece in the grouping, such as a basket, or lantern or other décor piece, appropriate to the room it is displayed in. This way, it allows the plants to still stand out without blending into one another, as well as allowing the display to be creatively more pleasing. If executed right, mixing modern & rustic, and other styles together, can be inspiring!
